light air tests sailors nerves and patience at the 2008 Sperry
Top-Sider St. Petersburg NOOD Regatta
On
the second day of the Sperry Top-Sider National Offshore One
Design (NOOD) Regatta, skippers Brad and Spike Boston sailed
past the competition. The Point Edward, Ontario, sailors again
led the Ultimate 20 and S2 7.9 fleets, respectively, and were well on their way to setting a new NOOD regatta record in St.
Petersburg.
After
a second day of racing, Brad and his boat Honour developed a comfortable
seven-point lead over his next closest competitors Pete
Marriot and Bob McGrath (Charlotte, N.C.). A fifth fleet title
would set a new
record for most fleet wins at St. Petersburg NOOD regatta.
Spike
and his boat Frequent Flyer were also positioned well going
into the S2 7.9 fleet finals, as he also enjoyed a
seven-point lead over his next closest competitor Bob Fleck
(Front Royal, Va.). He has captured four fleet wins at
previous NOOD regattas in St. Petersburg, making Spike a
contender for the same record that Brad was chasing.
On
the third and final day of the Sperry Top-Sider National Offshore
One Design (NOOD) Regatta held in St. Petersburg, Tampa Bay,
Brad and Spike Boston (Point Edward, Ont.) and Bay area
skipper Mike Carroll (Tampa) tied in setting the record at
five, for the most fleet victories at the St. Petersburg NOOD
regatta.
In
addition, Brad Boston also set another record for the most
consecutive fleet wins at the St. Petersburg NOOD
regatta.
Created
by Sailing World in 1988, the NOODs attract nearly 2,000 boats
and more than 30,000 competitors and spectators annually. Each
event in the series features multiple days of sailboat racing
for one-design models from 20 to 70 feet in length. In
addition to local sailors, sailing's top stars - including
America's Cup and Olympic champions - are well-represented at
the NOODs. Competitive sailors rate the NOODs as the top
national event in each region of the country.
